Today, I heard from a friend that people are having COUNTDOWNS until the end of ECQ, like it’s Christmas. I then found myself looking at the current data on our testing capacities. Lying in my bed as a COVID-positive individual, I am suddenly awash in dread and feel compelled to hold myself up as a cautionary tale.

I was tested for COVID on April 25 as part of the protocol of my hospital before treating me for my miscarriage. I even told the nurse (in my desire to avoid getting a long stick up my nose lol), “I’m sure I’m negative because I never left the house since March 13 and I have had zero contact with the outside world.” My chest X-ray came out clear also. It is exactly a week from the time of the testing and still I have no symptoms. Miscarriage aside, I feel strong and normal. I don’t know what will happen to me the coming days but the fact is I’ve had seven full days of being positive with no symptoms.

Right now, our limited testing capacity only allows us to test those with symptoms and those with exposure, or those like me with a medical emergency. If I didn’t have a medical emergency, I would not be qualified for testing. If I can be positive — me who never went to any grocery and who was a paranoid pregnant germophobe — can you imagine how many asymptomatic carriers are out there? More to the point, can you imagine what havoc these blissfully-unaware asymptomatic carriers can wreak when allowed to mix with senior citizens, pregnant women, and the immunocompromised?

Through the lens of my personal experience, I look at the photos of the jubilant crowds in places where ECQ was lifted and all I feel is fear. We have tested only around 75,000 individual cases in a country with a population of more than 100 million. Lifting the ECQ without drastically ramping up mass testing is MASS SLAUGHTER of vulnerable populations. Our health care system will not be able to handle the surge.

The virus is the enemy. And it is a stealthy, vicious enemy. We need a logical, intelligent, public health-centered, needs-sensitive response to it.
